• 5.0 out of 5 stars from rmichaelcross -- History, personal stories, and community— a fascinating exploration of a DC neighborhood : Shilpi Malinowski found a way to weave together a fascinating oral portrait of Shaw, Ledriot Park, and Bloomingdale through intimate personal stories and point of views, history, research, and present day events. This is a page-turner, and I couldn't get enough of the personal stories-- I felt like I was sitting in their living rooms listening to their conversations. And that's just it, none of the thirteen resident narrator stories felt forced or like an interview, they dovetailed effortlessly throughout the book as the author lays out important topics such as crime, race relations, schools, and community. This book is relatable no matter what city you live in. And, if you live in the suburbs or the country, you will certainly relate to the strong sense of community throughout this book. Who belongs here? Who (or what) is at fault for the heartbreaking displacement of long-time residents in these neighborhoods and the shifting demographics that may leave the remaining long-time residents feeling unwelcome or alienated? What does it mean to live in an integrated neighborhood, and what are each of our responsibilities to our communities? How do residents treat their homes and their neighborhood differently if they purchased it with property value/investment in mind, as opposed to inheriting their family home filled with memories? Is the influx of money and increased attention on safe streets that comes along with the increased property values unequivocally good for everyone? • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amy Argetsinger -- A piercing, heartbreaking, inspiring portrait of neighborhood change : Okay, full disclosure: Shilpi Malinowski's book is about the extraordinary, complicated neighborhood where I have lived for nearly a decade (and adjacent to the one where I lived for a dozen years before that). So of course I was going to eat this up, even if it were a bad book. But I was stunned by its nuance and beauty in addressing the many facets of gentrification -- a topic we too often broad-brush with either facile, history-erasing notions of "progress" or smug, simplistic fist-shaking about who belongs where. If you're truly interested in grappling with the complexities of the gentrification in any community, this book has a lot to offer. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
