:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wren T. -- May our minds be open, our hearts kind, and our spirits fierce : An absolutely brilliant tale of what happens when a clever girl who thinks deeply and loves fiercely has someone to protect. A whole new magic system, and a different approach to all the fairy tale references and tropes, in a very refreshing way: absolutely everyone in this book is a person, doing their best with what they know at the time. Even the slightly anxious dragon. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Jenifer Sawicki -- Did not live up to its promise : Wonderful opening chapters in the Kindle sample seduced me into buying this immediately instead of waiting three months in the queue to borrow it from my public library. But the rest of the book felt more like a pastiche of brainstormed episodes rather than the smooth tapestry Mercedes Lackey usually weaves — I actually had to walk away from reading several times, instead of reading straight through the night to the end as I usually do when one of her books comes out. _Beyond_ (released June, 2021), about the founding of Valdemar, was much better, _Jolene_ (released December, 2020), is one of her all-time best, but _Briarheart_ feels like one project too many, crammed in between all the other projects — five new works, five rereleases, and a short story collection — Ms Lackey has scheduled for release in 2021 and 2022. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from LC Rogers -- Great story : A fabulous retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story. In this version, Princess Aurora never makes it out if her cradle. It's all about her big half-sister and her companions who are sworn to protect the baby princess. Mercedes Lackey excels at world building and character development and this story is no exception. I sincerely hope that this turns out to be the first in a series. I would love to read more if this intriguing story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Great book : I loved this fractured fairy tale take on Sleeping Beauty, told from the point of view of Princess Aurora's older half-sister, Miriam. The writing style reminded me somewhat of "The Black Swan" and "Firebird", also by Mercedes Lackey. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from E.P. McLean -- First in possible series : Better then many recent Lackey books. Has a believable heroine and engaging friends. World owes a lot to her other fantasy series. Always had a gift for building wonderful characters, but often in recent years the characters have been emotionally flat. Hope to see follow up books in this series. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- I loved it : It was clean but not childish. I loved the imagination & pace - a cozy story with light hearted times interspersed with the adventures and magic. It wasn't all grim darkness and courage, honor, hard work & loyalty were present in all the companions. I loved the King's faithfulness. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dragonflyer13 -- wonderful : Another absolutely magical and creatively reimagined fairytale by the talented Mercedes Lackey. Briarheart was so good I sat down and read it one sitting. I hope she writes a sequel at the very least or turns it into another series. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amy M. Miller -- Excellent read : Quite a good read. I think it intends to be another series. It seems like it might be in the world of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, possible centuries after the original stories. Perhaps not, but there are hints of it. I look forward to more entries in this series. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anna -- Lovely fairytale : Loved this tale it was fast paced, with plenty of twists and turns. Loved the characters and the humour. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable read. I rather hope it will become a series rather than just a standalone book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- I loved it but... : The twist made me think of a coercion spell or an imposter, or something, I don't know, you'll know what I mean when you get to it (not a spoiler I promise!). And I must admit the use of "companions" felt like a future crossover as well as the Snow White mentions and definitely the cliffhanger type ending. Maybe I'm imagining it all? :p But still, brilliantly written, I just definitely need some future books in this arc, please :) ( Reviewed in Australia on October 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret A. Jones -- Lovely : This is a variation of Sleeping Beauty and a much more interesting story. The King a has a new baby girl a beautiful child named Aurora who is blessed by her three fairy god mother’s but a wicked dark fairy enters the celebration Miriam her step sister kills the evil one with magic that she didn’t know that she had. This sets the stage for a group of guardians forming. It’s very good book. ( Reviewed in Canada on October 7, 2021 )
